What's in This Guide
- Epic Universe is Universal's fourth Orlando park — opened May 2025, roughly the size of Magic Kingdom with five immersive themed worlds.
- Disney World still holds on sheer scale (4 parks + 2 water parks vs. Universal's 4 parks + water park).
- For teens, thrill-seekers, and adults, Epic Universe arguably offers the single best ride lineup in Orlando right now.
- For multi-generational families, young kids (under 7), or nostalgia-driven travelers, Disney still wins decisively.
- The smart move for 7+ day first-timers in 2026 is often a split trip — 4–5 Disney days, 2–3 Universal days.
The New Orlando Landscape
For thirty years, "Orlando theme parks" was shorthand for "Disney World, plus maybe a day at Universal." That changed in May 2025. Universal's Epic Universe opened as the largest theme park built in the U.S. in a quarter-century — 750 acres, five fully themed lands, and a ride lineup that critics almost universally called the best in the country on opening day.
So the question you used to not have to ask — which parks, and for how many days — now matters. If you're planning a 2026 Orlando trip, picking Disney by default is no longer a safe assumption.

Where Each One Wins
Wins On...
Scale and variety
Four full parks means seven days of different experiences. Epic Universe plus Islands of Adventure is world-class, but it's still less total content than four Disney parks.
Young children
Magic Kingdom's entire vocabulary is built for kids under 10. Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, it's a small world, Dumbo, character meets — nothing at Universal touches the under-5 experience.
Nighttime shows and atmosphere
Fireworks at Magic Kingdom and Epcot, Fantasmic at Hollywood Studios — Disney's evening spectacular game is still unmatched. Universal has the Universal Horror Nights and occasional lagoon shows, but nothing nightly on Disney's scale.
Table-service dining
Over 100 sit-down restaurants across the resort, including character meals, signature fine dining, and themed immersive spots. Universal is catching up but still thinner.
Transportation inside the bubble
Monorails, Skyliner, buses, boats, the works. Once you're on Disney property, you don't touch a rental car again. Universal requires more driving between parks and on-property hotels.
Wins On...
Thrill rides
Stardust Racers (dueling launch coaster), VelociCoaster, Hagrid's, Mummy Revenge — Universal's thrill lineup punches well above Disney's. Epic Universe added a new top-tier coaster and multiple family-thrill rides.
Immersive theming density
Hogsmeade and Diagon Alley set the standard; Epic Universe extended it to five new lands. The theming-per-square-foot density at Universal's best moments exceeds Disney's best moments. That's a real, recent shift.
Harry Potter fans
Three Harry Potter lands now (Hogsmeade at IOA, Diagon Alley at Universal Studios, and Ministry of Magic at Epic Universe). For any serious Potter fan, Universal is the default.
Teens and adults
The overall mix — faster rides, darker humor, more adult-coded theming — aligns better with teens and adults without kids. Disney has outstanding adult content (Epcot World Showcase), but Universal's center of gravity is older.
Express Pass value
Stay at a Premier on-property hotel (Hard Rock, Portofino Bay, Royal Pacific) and Express Pass is included free for your whole stay. That's a $200+ per person per day value you simply cannot get at Disney.
Pick Your Park by Traveler Type
Families with kids under 7
The density of kid-appropriate attractions at Magic Kingdom alone exceeds what Epic Universe or any Universal park offers for this age group. Add character meets, meet-and-greet breakfasts, and the fact that Disney's whole emotional register is built for little kids, and it's not close. Save Universal for when the youngest is 7+.
Families with kids 8–14
Kids this age can ride everything at both parks, love Harry Potter, and appreciate the thrill factor at Universal. They also still light up for Disney characters and fireworks. A 7-day trip split 4 Disney / 3 Universal is often the best week of their lives.
Teens and adults without kids
Epic Universe + Islands of Adventure is, ride-for-ride, the best adult theme park lineup in the country right now. If thrill rides, immersive theming, and darker humor are your thing, Universal is the better pick for a shorter trip. Disney earns its place via Epcot World Showcase, Galaxy's Edge, and nighttime shows — but Universal's ride quality has pulled ahead.
Multi-generational (grandparents, kids, teens)
Disney handles mixed-mobility and mixed-thrill-tolerance better. More shows, more low-key attractions, more rest spots, and better transportation for anyone who needs it. Universal works as a 2–3 day add-on, especially if the teens can break off for a half-day of coasters.
Harry Potter superfans
Three Wizarding World lands, wand interactivity across parks, Ollivanders wand ceremony, butterbeer in its original home. If Potter is the trip's north star, Disney becomes optional.
Cost Comparison
For a family of four on a 5-day trip, rough 2026 all-in estimates:
| Budget Tier | Disney World (5 days) | Universal (5 days) |
|---|---|---|
| Budget (value resort, QS dining) | $3,500–$4,500 | $3,200–$4,200 |
| Mid-range (moderate resort, mixed dining) | $5,000–$6,500 | $4,500–$6,000 |
| Premium (deluxe + table service + Lightning Lane / Express) | $7,500–$10,000+ | $6,500–$9,500+ |
Logistics: Getting Between Them
Disney World and Universal Orlando are about 20 minutes apart by car (10 miles), both in the greater Orlando area. If you're doing a split trip, you have three main options:
Option 1: Stay entirely at one resort, drive between
Simplest and cheapest. Rent a car, pick one home base, and drive to the other property on crossover days. Works well if you're visiting Universal as a 1–2 day add-on.
Option 2: Mid-trip hotel swap
Stay Disney first, then move to Universal (or vice versa). Best for longer split trips (7+ days) where you want to experience both "inside the bubble" feelings. Extra logistical overhead from the move day.
Option 3: Stay off-property equidistant
A mid-priced hotel along I-4 between the two resorts (International Drive area) works well for cost-conscious split trips. You lose both "bubble" experiences but save significantly on lodging.
The Split-Trip Strategy
Our Recommended 7-Day Split
For a first-timer or returning family who wants to see both properties in one trip, here's the day-by-day we most often suggest:
This sequencing lets Disney build the emotional arc of the trip (Magic Kingdom as emotional centerpiece, Animal Kingdom as a quieter day) before shifting to Universal's thrill-first register at the end. Move hotels on Day 5 so Days 6–7 start fresh from Universal property.
For Shorter Trips
- 5 days: 3 Disney parks + 2 Universal (skip Animal Kingdom or do it half-day with Park Hopper; spend Day 4–5 at Universal/Epic Universe).
- 4 days: Pick one. Trying to fit both into 4 days short-changes both.
- 10+ days: 5 Disney + 3 Universal + 2 rest/Disney Springs/water parks. This is the aspirational dream trip.
The Bottom Line
Disney World is still the more complete experience. Four parks with different emotional registers, a mature dining scene, nighttime shows on a scale no one else can match, and a transportation ecosystem that makes the whole thing feel like one connected place. For most families, and especially families with young children, it's still the right first choice.
But Epic Universe has changed the math. Universal now has the best ride lineup in Orlando, and the best one ride-for-ride in the country. If your group is teens, adults, thrill-seekers, or Harry Potter fans, Universal is no longer the second-tier option.
The most valuable insight we can offer: don't treat this as either-or. If you can stretch your trip to 7+ days, do both. It's 20 minutes of driving and one hotel swap, and you get two of the best theme park experiences in the world in a single vacation. That's a trip people talk about for years.
