A 7-minute Omnimover dark ride through scenes from The Little Mermaid. Continuous-loading clamshells mean the queue moves fast, the wait is rarely punishing, and the under-the-sea ballroom scene is one of the best examples of Disney's animatronic craft from the last decade.
Under the Sea ~ Journey of the Little Mermaid opened in 2012 as part of New Fantasyland. The ride uses Omnimover technology (the same continuously-moving clamshell system as the Haunted Mansion's Doom Buggies), pulling you through scenes that recreate the major moments of the 1989 animated film โ Ariel singing 'Part of Your World,' the Under the Sea musical number, Ursula's lair, and the wedding finale.
No height requirement โ any guest can ride. Children under 7 must be accompanied by someone 14 or older.
You climb into a clamshell vehicle (each seats 2-3) without the line ever stopping. The ride takes you through Ariel's grotto, into the underwater kingdom for the centerpiece Under the Sea scene (which features a full ensemble of animatronic sea creatures including Sebastian, Flounder, and Ariel), through Ursula's lair (the most visually intense moment, with a full-size animatronic Ursula towering overhead), and concludes with the wedding scene at the surface.
The pacing is unhurried. The animatronic Ursula is one of the largest at Walt Disney World โ roughly 12 feet tall, with detailed face-projection. The whole ride is family-friendly with no scares, no drops, and no surprises.
Under the Sea is the rare Magic Kingdom dark ride where Lightning Lane is often unnecessary. The Omnimover capacity keeps standby moving โ a 30-minute posted wait is typically 20 minutes of actual queue time.
If you have multiple LL slots available: Under the Sea makes a strong Pick 5 or Pick 6 โ useful but never the highest-impact pick.
Average standby wait by season (observed over 2024-2025 data):
| Season | Morning | Midday | Evening |
|---|---|---|---|
| Low season | 10 min | 25 min | 15 min |
| Moderate | 20 min | 40 min | 25 min |
| High season | 30 min | 55 min | 35 min |
| Holiday peaks | 40 min | 75 min | 45 min |
Anytime is acceptable. Mid-day waits are slightly longer than morning or evening, but the gap is smaller than at peer rides. Combine with Seven Dwarfs Mine Train (next door) or Mickey's PhilharMagic in a single Fantasyland circuit.
The under-the-sea scene alone is worth the visit.
Slow, bright, no surprises. Toddler-friendly throughout.
Air-conditioned dark ride. Pleasant 7-minute reset.
The ride is fundamentally a Little Mermaid IP showcase. If your family doesn't care, the ride doesn't transcend that.
Look up in the Under the Sea ballroom. The ceiling has a school of fish that moves with the music. Most riders only look at the main animatronic figures.
The Ursula animatronic is huge. Roughly 12 feet tall with face-projection. Sit toward the front of your clamshell for the best angle.
Ride during a peak crowd day. The Omnimover capacity makes Under the Sea unusually robust to crowds. While other Fantasyland rides have 60-minute waits, this one might be 35.
Don't expect a wow factor for adults. It's a beautiful, well-crafted, gentle ride. If you came for thrills, calibrate expectations.
