The first-ever Mickey Mouse ride. A trackless dark ride through a cartoon world where physics don't apply. No height requirement, wide family appeal, consistently underrated.
Mickey & Minnie's Runaway Railway opened in March 2020 (and promptly closed for the pandemic). It's the first attraction starring Mickey Mouse β strangely, Disney has had theme parks for 65+ years without a Mickey ride until this one. The ride is trackless: vehicles use magnetic tracking to rotate, spin, and move independently through projection-rich scenes. The premise: you step into a Mickey cartoon that's gone off the rails. Mickey and Minnie are conducting a picnic train; you get sucked into their world.
No height requirement β any guest can ride. Children under 7 must be accompanied by someone 14 or older.
The ride opens with a short pre-show featuring Mickey and Minnie inviting you into their cartoon. You then board a runaway train car (trackless) and spin through six themed scenes: a rainforest, a dance hall, a waterfall, a tornado, etc. Each scene uses projections and practical effects together.
The ride is gentle β no drops, no speed, no loops. Movement is smooth and the storytelling is wordless and charming.
Solid Multi Pass pick at Hollywood Studios. Waits are often lower than Slinky Dog or Smugglers Run, so LL isn't always essential β but for families who want to cruise through the day without any 60-minute waits, it's a comfortable selection.
The ride's capacity is moderate. Cast members load quickly, which keeps standby moving.
Average standby wait by season (observed over 2024-2025 data):
| Season | Morning | Midday | Evening |
|---|---|---|---|
| Low season | 25 min | 45 min | 30 min |
| Moderate | 40 min | 65 min | 45 min |
| High season | 55 min | 90 min | 60 min |
| Holiday peaks | 70 min | 120+ min | 75 min |
Midday works better than morning here. Most guests rope-drop Rise of the Resistance or Slinky Dog Dash, which means Runaway Railway often has a 20-30 minute wait in the 10-11am window while everyone else is in Toy Story Land.
Evenings also work β the ride runs until park close with steadily dropping waits.
No height requirement, gentle, and joyful. Kids love it.
The ride leans into classic Mickey cartoon aesthetics. If you grew up with Disney animation, you'll recognize 20+ references.
It's a dark ride. No speed, no drops. If you're chasing intensity, skip it.
Most of the visuals are screen-based. If you prefer tangible sets, this ride feels "flat" compared to Rise of the Resistance.
Watch the pre-show. The Goofy-directed cartoon at the start is a full short film. Don't phone-check your way through it.
Look for references to classic Mickey cartoons. "Steamboat Willie" appears. "Band Concert" appears. "Building a Building" appears. Every scene is built around a specific short.
Ride once, then again. Trackless vehicles take different paths through each scene. You can't predict which vehicle you'll get. Repeat rides show you parts you missed.
The old Great Movie Ride façade is still visible. The Chinese Theater building houses the ride. Fans of the old attraction can still see the original signage outside.
